Keep a read-only copy of the original export. Perform normalization and deduplication in a separate working copy so you can trace a changed number back to its source row.

Data quality
Clean WhatsApp phone numbers without damaging them
Treat a phone number as text, not as a calculation. Preserve the country code, remove formatting only when the destination requires it, and never infer a missing country code from a name alone.
- Keep the original phone column unchanged and create a separate normalized column.
- Store country codes explicitly; a local-looking number may be ambiguous outside its original market.
- Deduplicate by normalized number, then review rows with different names manually.
- Do not interpret a blank name as an invalid number; some WhatsApp records expose only a phone identifier.
